The Dream Is Planted...

Early Sharyland ISD

Sharyland Independent School District is situated in the scenic Lower Texas Rio Grande Valley, serving the communities of Mission, Alton, Palmhurst, Edinburg, and McAllen. Originally, the area was sparsely populated by ranching families, which gained attention in the 1900's by land developers. One such developer was John H. Shary, who visited in 1912 and recognized the land's potential for farming and citrus production. He purchased thousands of acres, naming it Sharyland, which quickly became known for its citrus. Shary continued to live there until he died in 1945.

Sharyland Independent School District is named in honor of John H. Shary, who was president of the district’s first board of trustees. Established in 1921, this twenty-six-square-mile school district is situated in Hidalgo County. The district is committed to providing the highest quality education possible for all students.
