TIER 3 Intensive Intervention
Tier 3 interventions differ from Tier 2 in that they are highly individualized and data-driven, developed through ongoing problem-solving and progress monitoring at the student level. Instruction is typically provided in very small groups or one-to-one settings when necessary to meet student needs.
Tier 3 support integrates all components of the MTSS framework, including Tier 1 core instruction, Tier 2 targeted interventions, and additional intensive, individualized supports. It applies to students with significant academic, behavioral, or social-emotional needs who are at high risk of persistent difficulty without intensive intervention.
Tier 3 plans extend beyond intervention time alone. The multidisciplinary team identifies and documents strategies to support student success during core instruction (Tier 1) as well as recommended supports for implementation at home and, when appropriate, in community settings to promote consistency and generalization of skills.
