We encourage you to keep communication open with your child's teacher(s). You may also contact your campus LPAC Administrator (Assistant Principals) and ESL Strategist for more information regarding your child's English Language Proficiency Level and instructional plan for academic and linguistic support.
We work together to provide you child with the academic and linguistic skills s/he will need for a bright future in an everchanging world. In our Bilingual program, you child will learn to appreciate his home language and see it as a springboard for learning English. Students who exit our Bilingual program outperform their English only peers, understand 2 of the 3 top world languages, and can communicate with 85% of the world! We look forward to serving your child and your family throughout the years! THANK YOU for placing your trust in our program!

Transitional Bilingual Early Exit Model (PK-6th)
Sharyland ISD implements the state mandated Bilingual Program through the Transitional Bilingual Early Exit Model as per Texas Education Code (TEC) §89.1210 for student's whose home language is Spanish and who demonstrate a need for additional support learning English. This transitional model is a full-time program that provides instruction in both Spanish and English commensurate with the students’ linguistic proficiency and academic potential [TEC §89.1210(b)]. Students learn their TEKS in their first language using our Spanish textbook, then transfer that knowledge to English using their English textbook. The goal of the Transitional Bilingual Early Exit model is to completely transition Emergent Bilingual students’ instruction into English within 5 years of their participation in the program. Instruction is tailored to the student’s needs by child Language Proficiency Assessment Committee (LPAC) and Bilingual Certified teachers who monitor the linguistic and academic progress of each student. Instruction is designed to address the affective, linguistic and cognitive needs of Emergent Bilingual students.
Some people may think rushing into English is best. However, research shows us that developing a strong first language (home language) sets a solid foundation for developing strong English language skills (and many other languages, too).
In life, we want students to maintain their native, home language because being bilingual opens many opportunities for learning and working, and helps students make connections with more people and community resources. Our Bilingual students have the opportunity to learn, speak, read, and write in 2 of the 3 top world languages! In doing so, they have the skills to communicate with 85% of the world!
Content-Based ESL Model
(Native Speakers of a language other than English or Spanish, PK-6th)
Sharyland ISD serves students from 21 different languages as we implement the state mandated English as a Second Language (ESL) Program through the Content-Based ESL Model as per TEC §89.1210. This model provides supplementary instruction for all content areas (Reading, Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies) by integrating intensive language instruction within subject matter instruction that focuses on learning a second language using English as a medium to learn math, science, social studies, and other academic subjects. Teachers use Content-Based Language Instruction in the form of visuals, modified texts, and modified assignments to facilitate comprehension. Teachers are ESL Certified and/or have received professional development in Sheltered Instruction.

ESL Pull-Out Model (Grades 7th & 8th)
Sharyland ISD implements the state mandated English as a Second Language (ESL) Program through the ESL Pull-out Model as per TEC §89.1210. This model serves students identified as emergent bilingual students through English instruction provided by an appropriately certified ESL teacher under the TEC, §29.061(c), through English language arts and reading. Our Jr. High campuses also have some ESL Certified teachers in Math, Science, and Social Studies.
ESL is an intensive English language instruction program provided by ESL certified teachers who are trained in effective second language acquisition methods. The goal of an ESL program is for emergent bilingual students to attain full proficiency in English in order to have access to fully participate in school. Students are served through Content-Based Language Instruction which is an integrated approach to language instruction in which language is developed within the context of content delivery that is linguistically sustaining. Sheltered instruction is a similar term used to describe instruction that makes content comprehensible while supporting language development. However, CBLI emphasizes the targeted and intentional methods used to meet the affective, linguistic, and cognitive needs of EB students through the medium of content in the students’ primary language and/or English.
We encourage our students to maintain their home language as they acquire English. A strong first language provides a solid foundation upon which our students can build multilingual capabilities beginning with English. Students who speak both Spanish and English have greater opportunities in life being that the speak 2 of the 3 top languages of the world! With these bilingual skills, they are able to communicate with 85% of the world! Students who exit our program outperform their English only peers.
