The Sharyland ISD Operations Department is dedicated to supporting the district’s mission by maintaining safe, clean, and efficient learning environments for all students and staff. Our department oversees custodial services, maintenance, grounds, and facilities operations to ensure that every campus and building meets the highest standards of safety, functionality, and appearance.

Maintenance

The Maintenance Department oversees a total of 1,768,038 square feet across 46 facilities, both indoors and outdoors. This includes essential services such as facility planning, plumbing, electrical work, grounds, HVAC/heating, carpentry, metal fabrication, painting, and locksmith maintenance. Each task is carried out by our team of highly skilled craft personnel.

On average, the Maintenance Department processes over 400 work orders each month. These requests can range from minor repairs, like fixing an electrical plug, to significant projects such as relocating walls or setting up computer labs. A single work order might necessitate the collaboration of three or four different maintenance specialties and can take anywhere from 15 minutes to several weeks to complete.

Moreover, the Maintenance Department is also responsible for renovations, which include tasks like moving walls, building cabinets, and redesigning office spaces, ensuring that our facilities meet the evolving needs of our organization.

Integrated Pest Management

IPM Reference to Texas Law

Integrated Pest Management Program Definition: "Integrated pest management" means a pest management strategy that relies on multiple pest control tactics, including the judicious use of pesticides, informed by accurate identification and scientific knowledge of pests, reliable monitoring methods to assess pest presence, preventative measures to avoid pest infestations, and thresholds to determine when corrective control measures are needed. 4 TAC 7.114(13).

The IPM program shall contain these essential elements: A) A definition of IPM consistent with this section. B) A reference to Texas laws and rules governing pesticide use and IPM in public schools. C) Information about who can apply pesticides on school district property, and D) Information about designating, registering, and required training for the district's IPM coordinator. The superintendent and IPM coordinator shall maintain a copy of the policy.

The District is committed to following integrated pest management (IPM) guidelines as required by Chapter 1951 of the Occupations Code and Title 4, Chapter 7 of the Administrative Code in all pest control activities that take place on District property.

The Superintendent shall designate the IPM coordinators(s), who shall be registered with the Texas Department of Agriculture. The IPM coordinators(s) shall receive training in accordance with law and shall provide training to District employees, as necessary.

The IPM coordinators(s), in addition to the responsibilities set out in CLB(Legal), shall coordinate with appropriate District administrators or other designated and trained employees regarding pesticide or herbicide applications in accordance with law. The IPM coordinator(s) shall determine when an emergency situation exists and an exception to the 48-hour notice requirement may be made.

If the IPM coordinator is a licensed applicator, the IPM coordinator may apply pesticides in accordance with law. No other employee or other person or entity shall be permitted to apply a pesticide or herbicide at a District facility, including residential property primarily used as student housing, without the prior approval of the IPM coordinator and other than in the manner prescribed by law and the District's IPM program.

SISD recognized that structural pests and landscape pests or weeds can pose a significant problem to both humans and property. It is the policy of SISD to incorporate an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program to control structural and landscape pests and weeds. The district IPM Coordinator is responsible for insuring that the district IPM policy and plan is maintained and all SPCB (State Pest Control Board) regulations are followed.

The IPM program will ensure that the least toxic control measures will be used with emphasis given to baits and non-chemical control whenever possible.

Through standard purchasing procedures, the district will contract with a local contractor for structural and landscape pest control. The district will require the private contractor providing pest control services to follow all Structural Pest Control Board (SPCB) guidelines as they pertain to schools and to follow the SISD IPM policy and plan.

As required by SPCB, the contractor must post treatment notices at each site and complete monthly inspection forms. The forms are used to monitor the level and type of pests or to note area requiring repair to prevent pest entry or harborage.

Integrated Pest Management Plan or IPM is a system of controlling pests that does not depend on automatic or frequent use of pesticides. Monitoring and evaluation of pest problems determine control measures necessary. Sharyland Independent School District (SISD) recommended action thresholds (i.e. level of pest infestation) would be used to determine when treatment is required.

One part of the annual pest control contract is the application of pesticides and/or herbicides by the private contractor’s licensed certified-applications. Additionally, a private contractor may be hired to perform lawn and ornamental treatments separate from the annual contract. It will be the contractor’s responsibility to follow all state and federal laws and regulations concerning the posting, applications, and completion of the proper paperwork for each application. The contractor will forward a copy of the chemical label and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) along with the "Approval for Yellow and Red List Products" to SISD prior to making any applications. The application log sheet will be sent to the SISD IPM Coordinator after the application has been completed.

The contractor is responsible for monthly inspections and noting on the inspection sheet any repairs necessary for exclusion or non-chemical as necessary. SISD is responsible for making the minor repairs as funding permits.

SISD has established minimum standards for prevention.

The Sharyland ISD Operations Department is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community during severe weather events. We take proactive measures to prepare for potential emergencies by monitoring weather conditions, maintaining communication with local and state agencies, and implementing district-wide response plans.

Our team works diligently to secure facilities, safeguard equipment, and provide timely updates to campus administrators and families. In the event of early dismissal, school closures, or delayed openings, parents and staff will be notified through the district’s mass notification system via email and e-alerts. Sharyland ISD will also communicate important updates through various media outlets, including but not limited to SISD social media platforms, local television stations, and local radio stations.

Preparedness, communication, and rapid response are the cornerstones of our approach. At Sharyland ISD, the safety of our students and staff remains our top priority before, during, and after severe weather.

Back-to-School Safety Tips

As we welcome students and staff back for a new school year, Sharyland ISD reminds everyone to stay alert and practice safety in and around our campuses. The safety of our students, staff, and families is always our top priority. Please take a moment to review these important safety reminders:

For Drivers:

Slow down and watch for students walking or biking to school, especially in school zones.
Obey all traffic signs and crossing guards.
Never pass a stopped school bus with flashing red lights — it’s the law.
Avoid distractions such as cell phones while driving near schools or bus stops.

For Parents and Students:

Use designated crosswalks and sidewalks whenever possible.
Arrive early to avoid rushing during drop-off and pick-up times.
Remind children not to talk to strangers or accept rides from anyone they don’t know.
Make sure students know emergency contact information.

For Staff and Community Members:

Report any safety hazards or suspicious activity immediately to campus administration or district security.
Keep all doors and gates secured and do not allow unauthorized visitors on campus.
